Is it legal to shoot your own dog?
« on: February 02, 2010, 02:18:37 AM »

Now I know this is a touchy subject, so DO NOT go off on me here. When I was a kid and growing up, it happened all the time. I'm just asking is it still legal, or have they made laws against it.

Let's say your dog is old and in bad shape, on his last legs, and you want to do the proper thing and not let him suffer any more. Can you shoot him, or do you have to now pay the vet to put him down? We used to have "mad dogs" when I was growing up. A dog came up growling and foaming, you shot him on site, no matter what. Haven't heard of many "mad dogs" lately though.

I'm just asking, is it both legal, and ethical, for you to put your dog down yourself, if you feel it is necessary?

BTW, I'm an animal lover from back yonder. I do love my chihuahuas, and can't imagine anything bad for them. This is just a question, like any other question.

There is a law currently making its way through the Miss-sippy legislature making 'first degree animal abuse' a felony. I do not know how it is worded, but it is alleged to deal only with domestic pets, cats and dogs.

I honestly don't know if the law would apply to humanely putting an animal down with a firearm, or not. There are circumstances where the only humane thing, for instance an animal that has been hit by a car and mortally injured, but not yet dead, is to put the animal out of its misery with the only tool at hand-- generally a firearm, or even something as drastic as a hammer or club.

I would have to read the proposed law-- and I have not seen it, only heard talk-talk about it on the radio.

I'd say law or not, treating a suffering animal other than putting them down would just be wrong.

I know coming up I was taught to do just that and not to let my emotions come between what needed to be done.

And as to the rabid dogs, if I DIDN'T go immediately and get a rifle and put it down, that was a guaranteed azz whippin!

See the rabid dog is suffering AND a harm to the community.  Even out in the country where folks are miles apart.  Back then one had to think about the many 'Old Man Russell(s) out in their fields plowing or doing whatever.

And what would happen to any of y'all if you was deer hunting, took a shot, deer runs off, but there is a trail of blood -- and you didn't track it to finish it off?

That right there would get me a real severe azz whippin and probably an 'in house' forfeiture of hunting or even handling any of my firearms! AND be the scorn of my friends.

Not by the gov, by my folks!!

Nope, they didn't play with stuff like this.  We was raised!!

when you're raised with a stick always handy-- to THEM, not to you-- you tend not to forget your lessons. Of course, in those days, my grandmother was 5 doors up the street, my great-aunt was 3 doors the other direction, and any passing momma on the street would as soon whup your ass as look at you, figuring you had probably already gotten away with something you oughta been whupped for that day, anyway....

Ain't that the truth!

I think that has a lot to do with me makin things 'stick' when I done made up my mind.  Or I think different before I commit.

Them times are behind us men.  I think we just might be the last generation to get the raisin we did.
Well maybe our children.  But I never did have to lay it on either one of them but once, when they was really old enough to be accountable.

Anyway, I guess I took this sorta off course from the topic of the thread here.  I think for me I was reminisin about much more than putting a sufferin animal down.  Then again, it's part of me.

I'll back off for now.  They is other threads.  Sorry admin.

Let me ask again. In MOST places in this country, if one is in the county where there are no 'discharging a firearm' laws, is it still legal to put your own dog down? Or has animal cruelty laws got to the point that they forbid that in most jurisdictions? I guess no one can speak for the whole country, but I'll bet some of you have some insight.

This goes towards freedom and non government interference. Just trying to find out how far we've come since the 50's and 60's.

The bill is in the Miss-sippy legislature. You should be able to get a copy of it fairly easily.

I guess this is why I like living in Arizona, I have never seen this issue come up. I was told by the sheriffs department in mohave county to shoot all unleashed dogs that came on my property and to stop calling them. My dogs had to defend themselves every night against the local dogs that were let run. after six of the fifty or so disappeared they started staying away. I couldn't open my front door without being challenged by a dozen or so strange dogs. Once I started thinning them out the problem took care of its self.

One of the guys at work came in complaining about his poor dog and having to spend 300 dollars to have a three inch broad head removed from the dog. He was really mad. I asked him if I could have the arrow head back and told him to keep his dog home. I told him that I was switching from a bow to a 357 because I was tired of loosing arrow heads. never saw his dog again.

Dog, cat, any animal, if it's in pain and suffering I'll put it down and the law be damned.  Talked about it with a Fish & Game gal in Montana, putting down a deer that'd been hit on the hiway, and she said only a badge was authorized to do so.  Told her that if I came across one I'd put it down and the badge that tried to give me chit about'd be next.  She shut up and stalked off'n never talked to me again for some reason.

yup, here you can shoot your own dog. I dont think it is legal in city limits though because the communist party will give you a ticket for discharging a firearm in city
limits or something like that.

Well...It might be where you live, but some jurisdictions would charge you with cruelty to aminals. I guess in some places you have to go pay the vet to put a suffering animal down, or take your chances.

I would imagine if one shot one in wichita or some of the other cities then that would be the case for sure. seems that each city here has different laws depending on which one you go to. guess the good thing is, I dont live in a city LOL
